Position Description:          Postdoctoral or staff position available immediately in the Merritt Lab for genetic studies of the human oral microbiome.

The Merritt Laboratory studies the human oral microbiome as a tractable model system to characterize the host-flora mechanisms responsible for mucosal dysbiotic diseases. We research the genetics of a variety of oral microbiome species isolated from clinical specimens, and more recently, we have developed a new mixed species polymicrobial infection model useful for revealing the mechanisms of polymicrobial synergism in oral dysbiotic diseases. Current research in the lab: 1) studies of oral bacterial genetics – isolate understudied microbiome species directly from clinical specimens, develop new microbiome genetic systems, and examine the genetic mechanisms mediating microbe-microbe and microbe-host interactions; and 2) studies of polymicrobial synergistic pathogenesis – isolate novel host-targeting bioactivities directly from oral microcosm biofilm communities, characterize microbiome interactions with epithelial and immune cells, and investigate mouse genetics and immunopathology in a murine model of polymicrobial infections.

Candidates should be highly self-motivated and possess a strong background in microbial genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, or a related field.

Typical duties of this position include:

genetic mutation construction, gene expression analysis, protein expression/purification, EMSA, Co-IP, cryo-EM, northern blotting, western blotting, FACS analysis, and fluorescence microscopy.

  • Evidence of extensive experience with current genetic, molecular biology, and/or biochemistry techniques
